What Have We Been Teaching Our Children?

Is this what we’ve been teaching our children
How to lie, to cheat, to steal
How to scheme, undermine and connive
How to satisfy, without scrupples,
Their own selfish wills?

Is this what we’ve been teaching our children
That Justice and Fair Play are dead
That Kindness expired with Jesus
And Greed, the new god, reigns instead?

Is this what we’ve been teaching our children
How to scoff at restrictions and rules
How to worship TV, videos and rock stars
How to think it’s cute to be nasty and cruel?

Is this what we’ve been teaching our children
That Deception is better than Truth
That Appearance is better than Substance
And that it’s fashionable to be uncouth?

But I hear you asking, Dear Parents
When did we teach our children such things?
And my response must simply be:
By the witness of our lifestyles
And all the hypocrisy it brings.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
